AKC Breed Standards

The Chow should be active, compact , with a well balanced physique. Dignified presence, with tail be carried well over the back.

It should be quiet, but guard well. The tongue should be bluish black.

Skull flat and broad, muzzle medium in length, and broad from eyes to tip as the breed standard . Nose should be wide and flat and should generally be black. In white Chows a light nose, and in some cases a self colored nose, are acceptable.

Shoulders strong, sloping and muscular, with a broad chest, but not too broad.

Feet should be somewhat cat-like, small and round.

Tail should carry well over the body.

Coat can be rougher smooth, and should be uncut. Coat should be Dense, straight, and stand outward. Inner coat should be soft and wooly. Hair around the neck are should form a Mane.

AKC Breed standard colors are black, red, blue, fawn, cream or white.

Male Chows s can be 19 to 22 inches tall, females 18 to 20 inches tall.

The Breed’s gait should be short strided, with feet seeming to skim the ground, in a consistent pendulum like movement.
